The Islamabad High Court (IHC) has formed a larger bench to hear a legal challenge against Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s (PTI) planned protest on September 27, according to Dawn.
The move comes after a petition was filed against the party’s proposed march on Islamabad. Dawn reports that the court has also summoned the attorney general and inspectors general of police over the planned demonstration. The hearing is expected to address concerns related to the protest’s legality and potential security implications.
The legal action follows public statements from political rivals. A leader of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) has questioned PTI’s ability to mobilise large numbers of supporters for the protest, as reported by The News Pakistan. The Lowy Institute has described the situation as a “September showdown,” indicating heightened political tensions in the country.
